Project objectives

Mountainous territories in the Europe and specially in the Asia occupy considerable areas. As a rule, the large mountainous systems are the world centres of the concentration of biodiversity. This is especially true for the Alps and the Altai, to some extent the systems-analogues with the similar altitudinal zonality, floristic links and plant communities of the same type. Thus the Siberian species Pinus sibirica, and the European species Pinus cembra appear to be the same species, forming the communities of the same type in different mountainous systems.

The purpose of the project is to develop a unified approaches and methods for inventarization of the diversity of the vegetation of the mountainous systems of the Alps and the Altai as model territories and on this basis to define the strategy for the conservation of the biodiversity of the mountains of Eurasia.

This problem can be solved only with the collaboration between European and Siberian scientists and later on with the participation of the specialists from Asian countries.

Background and significance of objectives

In the Central Siberian Botanical Garden of SB of RAS, there was gathered a considerable amount of material on the complex characteristics of the Altai vegetation: species and phytocoenotic diversity, regularities of the spatial structure and altitudinal zonality and the resource potential. Part of the material is already generalised and published in paper and monograph forms. The preparation of a 1:1000000 ecological phytocoenotic map of the Altai is completed, where the diversity as well as its spatial structural organisation are revealed.

Research plan: approaches and methods

It is mainly expected that a comparative analysis of the data on the diversity of the phytosystems of the Altai-Alps and the additional field works with the use of the aerospace pictures will be carried out.

Expected results

The common methods and approaches for the estimation and characteristics of the diversity of the vegetation of the mountainous territories will be developed. A unified data base on species and phytocoenotic diversity for the both mountainous systems and their resource potential will be created. Common and differentiating features for the both mountainous systems by such parameters as altitudinal zonality, regularities of the spatial structure, groups of common species and communities will be revealed. Series of topical large scaled maps, which are the base for ecological monitoring, will be made for model territories

On the basis of the data obtained, a unified strategy of inventarisation and conservation of the biodiversity of the mountainous systems of Eurasia will be developed, which contributes significantly to the realisation of the international convention on the conservation of the biodiversity.
