ICG SB RAS (Novosibirsk)

THE FEDERAL RESEARCH CENTER INSTITUTE OF CYTOLOGY AND GENETICS
The Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Director
Nikolay KOLCHANOV
Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences,
Doctor in Biological Sciences

The Institute of Cytology and Genetics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ICG SB RAS) is one of the earliest research institutions of the Siberian Branch. It ranks among the largest biological institutes in the world. The history of ICG is tightly linked to the resurrection of Russian genetics after its rooting at the August (1948) session of the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The institute was established in 1957.

NATIONAL PROJECTS

IC&G is receiving substantial support from the Russian Government. Over the past five years, IC&G has been awarded grants from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (67), the Russian State Subprograms “Frontiers in Genetics” (39), “Advanced Methods of Bioengineering” (3), “Human Genome” (5) and “Biological Diversity” (3). Additionally, IC&G has been awarded four grants in support of the best scientific schools and 34 in support of the best scientists.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

IC&G collaborates internationally. This collaboration has been supported by grants from INTAS, NATO and Britain’s Wellcome Trust. Working agreements exist between IC&G and laboratories, universities, institutes in many countries worldwide.

IC&G is visited by those who want to have a first-hand impression or personally do research work. IC&G hosts international conferences every year. IC&G is a place where biochemical and biotechnological companies make their presentations often.

Personnel: By the end of 2016, there are 63 research units in ICG SB RAS, which employ 1021 people, including  169 employees under the age of 39 years, 2 Advisor  of RAS, 4 Academician of RAS, 3 Corresponding members of RAS, 59 doctors of sciences, 248 candidates of sciences – in total 403 scientific researchers.

STUDY AND TRAINING

There are four IC&G-based chairs at the Novosibirsk State University: the Chair of Cytology and Genetics, the Chair of Molecular Biology, the Chair of Information Biology and the Chair of Physiology. Many IC&G people hold joint appointments as NSU teachers and some teach post-graduate courses in genetics, cell biology, cytology and histology, physiology, molecular biology and biochemistry, which involve research work at IC&G. Now, 63 graduate students have been entitled to attend the post-graduate courses.

The Institute has Dissertation Council for doctoral theses (D 003.011.01), considering works in three specialties: “Genetics”, “Cell Biology, Cytology, Histology” and “Mathematical Biology, Bioinformatics.”

EXHIBITIONS, PATENTS, PAPERS

IC&G exhibits across and outside Russia. Twenty-two IC&G products approved for use in medicine, agriculture and environment protection are on show in the Exhibition Hall of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Three have been awarded the Golden Medal by the Siberian Fair. Over the past 11 month, over 160 papers have been published and indexed in WEB of Knowledge (WoS), totaly more than 350 papers have been published in peer-reviewed journals.

Museum of History of Genetics in Siberia: On August 22, 2008, the Scientific Council of the Institute had decided to establish a “Museum of History of Genetics in Siberia.”

Now the museum has four exhibitions:
1) Memorial Room-Museum of Academician Dmitry Belyaev (1917-1985), who was the largest Soviet geneticist and director of the Institute from 1959 to 1985. (link).
2) Exposure in the open air, devoted to laboratory animals (link).
3) Exposure of local history from Laboratory of Environmental Education Institute (link).
4) Victory garden, founded in the spring of 2016 (link).
